Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
are the experiences we have with our kids that are memorable. It's worth the expense and worry of the farm for them to get out on the big projects. John kept repeating what a wonderful day it had been." May 11th: John and boys planned to finish moving the cattle but they got rained out. They got some good work done in the yard at home. May 12th: "Roy and Alice drove out to Coalville with us on Sunday afternoon. It was a pleasant ride with good company." May 25th: John and boys went back to Coalville to finish with the cattle and to catch up on the chores. May 30th: "We drove to Coalville last evening so we could spend Decoration Day there. We enjoyed sleeping in the cabin. We took care of decorating the graves early, visited with the old friends, and arrived home in Salt Lake about noon, then drove on out to the lake. The change of pace was good for us." June 3rd: ' W e took Steve to Coalville for the summer. He was glad to be able to stay at our cabin rather than at Ralph's place. He is still bashful." June 5th: "Steve called and wanted Jack (Crompton) and the wheelbarrow at once. Maxine (John's sister) took him out in the evening. Then another SOS from Steve. The cow having a calf is in difficulty. John Jr. tried to get Doc Osguthorpe and finally left with him at 10:30 p.m. and returned at 3 a.m. The calf had been dead for three days, and we learned the next day that the cow also died. This has been quite an experience for all concerned." June 8th: After they had put in a hard day's work, John and Orpha decided to run out to Coalville to see how the farmers were getting along. They found everything OK and took the boys to Dean's for a square meal. Gramp and Carmen went to the local movie while Orpha and John helped the boys put affairs in order. Jack was homesick, so he went home with them to be with his family for the weekend. June 11th: Orpha took Paul and Jack to Coalville to work with Steve. He was busy peeling pine logs for the fence. He put the two kids to work and the project seemed to be progressing well. Orpha went to work cleaning up the messy cabin. "Steve says if anything would force him to marry it would be to 'bach' it for a while." June 28th: "John had court in Coalville and Paul went with him. We left Paul and Jack there with Steve." June 29th: Orpha picked up
