particularly of his prize animals. When the children were indifferent to the attempts to keep them participating in the work involved in the seasonal round with the Coalville properties, John and Orpha would wonder if it was all worthwhile, but would decide they would all be the better for the experience, and would continue the tasks they must perform so it would all happen. Examples are included here of the kinds of tasks that needed to be performed during the different seasons of the year to keep the ranch operational. They are adapted from the entries in Orpha's diary for 1957. January 19th: John, Steve and Paul went to Coalville to cut a tree or two. February 9th: Steve and John Nelson spent the day building a mineral feeder for the calves. They worked hard together. Steve seemed to receive tremendous satisfaction from the job and it was well done. February 22nd: Orpha and her mother went to Coalville with John. While he was busy they sat in the car and addressed letters. It was a beautiful day. They returned home early in the evening. March 20th: Orpha went for a brief trip to Coalville with John. 'The cabin is in good shape and seems to be very attractive. Dinner club for April is to be held there. John wants it to be something special." March 23rd: "John Jr. had another flying lesson then went to Coalville to work. Steve is planning some farm work during spring vacation but it looks like the weather is against him." April 1st: Steve left for Coalville at dawn. He took Gramp's car and Roger Thompson went along. Debating together has made them good friends." April 6th: "John Jr. went to Coalville to farm but was frustrated by mud and snow at every turn." April 12th: "Steve had a successful day of farming." April 27th: ' W e had Dinner Club at the cabin in Coalville. The Hopis put on the program. The group seemed very interested. They were impressed with their intelligence, humor, and traits of leadership. Everything went well including John's part of the program. We got home late."
