CHAPTER SIX
The work of keeping up a hobby is not so much as it seems.. .It is difficult to tell where an activity leaves off being a hobby and becomes an avocation, or even a vocation. John 5. Boyden Deseret News
July 29,1951
OHN ALWAYS FELT A CERTAIN CLOSENESS TO NAture, and the many hobbies he developed beginning with his childhood days in Coalville reflect this sensitivity and appreciation for God's creations. After John was married and had children of his own, they all became involved in his hobbies or were affected by them. Among John's many hobbies were his 2100 acre stock ranch and farm, poetry composition, gardening, photography, birdwatching, and the collection of coins, stamps and Indian artifacts. The Deseret News Magazine, July 29, 1951, has a two-page illustrated spread by Alice M. Bailey on Man of Many Hobbies. In commenting on his management of the farm, the article states, "This year he and his sons have done the riding, branding and vaccinating. He personally grooms and exhibits his prize animals." With his law practice, civic involvements, and his interest in church service, 'This hints at a too heavy regime, but Mr. Boyden denies this. 'I don't overwork. After working all week at my law practice I don't go to the ranch and knock myself out. I don't believe in courting a heart attack. I live sensibly, hire much work done, and don't overtire. The work of keeping up a hobby is not so much as it seems.'
