Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
1959, announced that John "was appointed this week to the Sunday School General Board by General Superintendent George R. Hill." After a biographical sketch, the article continued: "Supt. Hill said Elder Boyden will perform duties with the board on a part-time basis until he completes some previously committed out-of-town assignments in connection with his law practice." Within a few months entries began to appear in John's journal relating to travel and assignments for the Sunday School General Board, and by 1961-62 these assignments appear frequently. By this time John Jr. and Carmen were studying at the University of Utah, Steve was in Central America on his mission and Paul was at East High. Orpha's assignment on the Primary General Board continued into 1963, so the family remained busy. An excerpt from Orpha's writings at the conclusion of her mother's personal history summarizes that period of family life very well:
When I was called to the General Board of Primary in 1952, Paul was only six years old. The Brethren were very much against calling women with young children, and I was turned down at first. O n further inquiry it was found that my parents lived near and the children would have good care (even better) in my absence, so the second time around my appointment was approved.. .Because Cub Scouting was a new program in the Church I was gone two or three nights a week, plus endless daytime meetings. This kept up during the first years. A year following my appointment John was made Bishop of Yale Second Ward and served five years. Those were hard years. We know we were blessed beyond measure or we never could have handled it. John Jr. was fifteen and Paul was six when 1 went on the board and we lived through it eleven and a half years. John, during five of these years, was bishop and carried on a campaign for Governor. He never missed a Sunday meeting. As soon as he was released as bishop Brother George R. Hill, General Superintendent of the Sunday School, called him to the Sunday School General Board.. . At this point in time (to use a phrase made famous by
