Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
Linn had originally formed this group soon after the Yale Ward was divided, including couples from each side of the new boundary. The group consisted of: Linn & Georgia Alder, John & Orpha Boyden, Paul & Ora D i o n , Frank & Maude Gunnell, Lynn & Eleanor Hales, ElRoy & Alice Nelson, O'Neal & Catharine Rich, David & Melba Shand, Sherman & Lois Christensen. The first time the group met John had just returned from Hopiland, and he was describing a Hopi wedding ceremony which he had witnessed. The term "mudhead" (the dancer in the ceremony representing the mudhead kachiia) fascinated the group and was adopted as the official name. The Mudheads met consistently over the years until ailing health prevented regular gatherings. Once-a-year reunions are still held, hosted by the Junior Mudheads, the children of the original tribe. These, along with many other close relationships, made service in the church a very satisfying, though demanding, experience. After Linn's passing, President Frank Bowers presided at the reorganization of the ward bishopric on September 8, 1957. Charles O'Neal Rich was sustained as First Counselor and Issac T. McQueen as Second Counselor. The children recall, "Dad was an outstanding teacher and loved the scriptures. He was known for the great love and comfort he found in the Gospel and his ability to express that love to and for others. "At the time of his passing, many ward members mentioned his large, soft hands which could communicate security and well-being with one firm handshake. He could hold a hymnbook in one hand with a finger sticking over one edge and his thumb extending beyond the book on the other side (much to the amusement of the deacons on the front row). One hand was sufficient to hold up a new baby after its blessing to give the congregation a better look. The same hand on a shoulder sent a message of caring and comfort to the wayward and bereaved. The comforting nature and innate goodness of Dad led many outside the ward and outside his faith to look to him in times of sorrow." John's term as bishop was characterized by an emphasis on missionary work at home as well as abroad, and several individuals
