Bishop Boyden of the Yale Second Ward
Young. October 17th Elder Richard L. Evans spoke at sacrament meeting, and October 24th. Elder Ezra Taft Benson, former ward member and, at that time, Secretary of Agriculture in President Eisenhower's cabinet, was the speaker. During the summer and fall of 1955 renovations were made inside and outside of the meeting house: the sidewalks in front and some of the windows were repaired; nine new outside doors were installed; wallpaper was steamed off, walls were refurbished and new blackboards were installed in the classrooms; insulation and electrical outlets were installed; repairs were made and hot water was piped to both rest rooms; large glass partitions were placed between the chapel and foyer to provide a "cry room:" a trophy case and bulletin board were installed in the foyer; a new cap was placed on the chimney; and plans were going forward to remodel the kitchen. In November the building was painted throughout, new flooring and seating were installed in the chapel, new chairs in the Relief Society room, a new microphone was provided for the rostrum, and other necessary repairs were made. The ward reunion, February 23, 1956, was made a special occasion. The theme, Safari to South Africa, was carried out by table decorations, and by snake skins, a stuffed lion, small animals and ferns placed in the foyer. The entertainment was a film showing ward members capturing a lion. The next year Brother and Sister Harold I. Bowman, Jr. were in charge of the ward reunion. In keeping with the Indian theme, the "Tribe of Many Feathers," the Indian student organization at BW, was invited to furnish the program. Other special occasions involving General Authorities were return visits and talks by Elders Benson, Evans, and Sill; two visits from Elder Joseph Fielding Smith, in 1955 and 1956, when he officiated in the blessing of his grandson, bore his testimony, and told of his recent trip to the Far East, then on a second occasion gave a talk on the obligation of church members to be involved with genealogical work; Elder Henry D. Moyle was present when Dan Oniki (one of John's Japanese scouts) returned from the Japanese Mission and told of the organization of the Church in the Far East.
