Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
as good a job as Bishop Olofson had done. Gramp used to love to tell what Bishop Olofson had said to him once. "Brother Sweeten, what can we do to get you to come to Church every Sunday?" Gramp replied, 'Well, just put one of the Boyden kids on the program." When John was made Bishop, Bishop Olofson said, "Now we'll have one of the Boyden kids on the program every Sunday!" Gramp never missed another Sunday meeting until his last illness. The bishopric was reorganized at the closing session of the Yale Second Ward Conference, November 15, 1953, in a meeting presided over by Elder Ezra Taft Benson, a former member of the ward, accompanied by Bishop Thorpe B. Isaacson. Albert G. Olofson was released as bishop, Thomas E. Robinson as first counselor and Grant E. Hayes as second counselor. John Sterling Boyden was sustained as bishop, with Linden B. Alder as first counselor and Charles O'Neal Rich as second counselor. Short talks were given by Elder Benson, Bishop Isaacson and members of the new and retiring bishoprics. John was ordained a High Priest and set apart as bishop by Elder ElRay L. Christiansen on November 18, 1953. A letter of December 16, 1953, signed by the Presiding Bishopric transferred to Bishop Boyden "as a corporation sole, without further legal process, the title to all ward property held by your predecessor." Church members seldom recognize what is required of a Bishop as a business executive and administrator. He tends to be thought of more as a father figure and spiritual counselor to ward members. December 10, 1953, a testimonial program and party honoring the retiring bishopric was held in the cultural hall. Approximately 300 members of Yale and Yale Second wards attended. February 25, 1954, the new bishopric (of course with lots of help from the members) held their first annual ward reunion, with dinner being served at 7 p.m., followed by entertainment provided by ward members. It was a good occasion enjoyed by the participants. During the first half of 1954, there were the usual reorganizations that come with a new bishopric. July 18, 1954, in sacrament meeting, Presiding Bishop Joseph L. Wirthlin paid his respects to the M o m o n pioneers with a speech on the life and accomplishments of Brigham
