Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
First and foremost, Dad was a great example. In the eyes of the family, it was difficult to see much difference between Dad's beliefs and his actions. This example sustained his children in their hours of decision. He learned to be a truly honest man.. .I didn't realize how careful one must be to preserve integrity as one practices his profession. Dad had a passion to do the right, as God gave him to see the right. He considered deceit with its many faces to be a low form of human behavior. On his death bed, Dad said, 'The main thing is to be an honest man." When Dad did teach by precept, it sometimes had a bit of humor in it. For example, occasionally we children borrowed tools from Dad's shop and neglected to return them. One day Dad posted a notice adapted from Mosiah 4:28 which read: "And I would that ye should remember, that whosoever among you borroweth of his nelghbor (or Dad) should return the t i g that he borroweth, a c c o r h as he doth agree, or else thou hn shalt commit sin; and perhaps thou shalt cause thy neighbor (or Dad) to commit sin also." Dad loved his wife and children. We always felt loved and had a good time together. Our home was not a somber place to be. Even though Dad was not always physically present, we knew that he loved us. He had a righteous ambition to achieve and a desire to contribute the most he could. He taught us to grow as we try to use our talents for the benefit of others. Dad would teach by drawing our attention to the good works of others. He taught the value of selfless, unheralded service by showing us the goodness and love of his mother-in-law at her funeral. The poem he wrote on this occasion is my favorite of all his poems (included in Appendiu). Lastly, Dad testified of his sure knowledge that the Lord lives and that He loves us and understands our needs. He was prepared to pass through the veil sanctified by his willingness to suffer all things. Now he is on the other side of the veil.. .I am confident that
