Family Memories
The children all recall, "Dad was the most honest person that we ever met. He would go way beyond normal expectations to make certain everything was fair and every little detail was perfectly square. He absolutely never disobeyed a traffic sign or cheated anyone in any way, regardless of whether or not anyone might find out. 'Dad was very flexible and could adjust easily. He was also f pragmatic, but never at the expense o optimism or integrity. We always remember him as busily engaged in many worthwhile projects, and he could change subjects often. I he had an extra fifteen minutes, f he would work on a project for that long and then come back to it several weeks later. He was probably overprogrammed, but made up for it by his excellent use of time and by having a wife who could pick up the slack when he was out of town or in court." John was very methodical and kept accurate records. An early ledger (1939) showed the purchase of shoes for John Jr. at $2.15. His records were minute to the last detail. Typical of this record keeping was a calendar kept in the bedroom listing the times and speeds of his daily workout on his exercyde. He kept all of his current legal work in files spread all over his office (including the couch), but his completed work was organized, microfilmed and meticulously filed.
In June of 1983, John Jr., F i t Counselor in the Bonneville Stake Presidency, was the Father's Day speaker at the Yale I1 Ward sacrament meeting. He was asked to speak on the subject of lessons his father had taught him about being a father. The following are excerpts from his remarks:
