Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
Church service having been missionaries, mission president, fist stake president in Mexico, regional representative and eventually President and Matron of the Mexico City Temple. John O'Donnal had grown up in the Colonies in Mexico with Harold. He went to Guatemala for the US. Department of Agriculture as a young man, and later married the charming Carmen, who became the first convert to the Church in Central America. They, too, have a long record of Church service, including counselor to several mission presidents in Guatemala, Mission President then counselor to Pres. Brown of the Mexico City Temple, and President and Matron of the temple in Guatemala. We visited these friends in Mexico and Guatemala and they, in turn, visited us when they came to Salt Lake for General Conference." On one such occasion, January of 1974, John and Orpha, with Carmen and John Figree, went to Mexico City to visit the Browns, who accompanied them to Guatemala to visit the O'Donnals. Whiie visiting at the O'Donnals' home at Lake Atitlan, John penned the following verse: Lake Atitlan The sun in radiant splendor reflects its rays on Atitlan. A tender breeze now beckons last fantasy be gone. A hummingbird descends the helicopter way, To extract the nectar of the day. And softly touches blossoms. An unfamiliar whistle slides the scale from low to high, But the feathered friend eluded my oh so eager eye. The calm is gently soothed with ripples of the lake. I submit my soul to nature, its blessings to partake. What a pleasant world we live in if it could only be, That man with nature's lesson would live in harmony. In June 1978, John and Orpha, with John Jr. and Marge, visited England, Scotland, and Wales, the birthplaces of many ancestors. This was John's last trip. After John Jr. and Marge had to return home, Orpha and John were able to continue on for a few days
