Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
new University Married Student Ward on Sunnyside Avenue where both couples would be attending church. A major crisis occurred when in getting ready to go, Mother caught her zipper in the eyelet fabric of her dress. She was 'sweating blood' while Steve and I took fifteen minutes to fix the zipper. We all finally made it to the church before the guests, and the evening turned out very well, despite the nerve-wracking beginning. "Figuring out the guest lists for three receptions, a tea and an open house was a rather formidable task, but Mother was a good organizer and had things well in hand. Just keeping track of which gfts belonged to which couple proved to be a major problem." Orpha continues, 'The first marriage was on July 1,when Patti and Steve were married in the Salt Lake Temple by President Marion G. Romney. When he came into the room and saw us all sitting there with very serious expressions, many being teary-eyed, he said, Now are you sure you want to go through with this?' Of course that broke the ice. That evening we were all in Tremonton where a lovely reception was held at the new stake center. "On July 6, John and Marge were manied in the Salt Lake Temple. The ceremony was performed by Elder Richard L. Evans. A reception was held July 9 in the Alumni House of the University of California at Berkeley, where Marge had lived until she came to B W . Everyone got to Berkeley and back with no problems (except a blowout in the new Buick). "Carmen and John were married August 21 in the Salt Lake Temple by President Harold B. Lee, and the reception was held in the Empire Room of the Hotel Utah that evening. They left August 24 in their VW for Boston, where John was to start the MBA program at Harvard. Carmen still had one quarter of school to go, which she finished at Boston University. "There was a lull in 'love and affection' until 197l. In the meantime, Paul had finished high school, had served active duty with the Utah National Guard (discharged as an x-ray technician), had completed a mission to the Philippines and was attending the University of Utah. He met AnnMcConkie, and b e f o ~ their wedding plans long were made. Their official engagement took place October 12, 1971.
