graduating from the University and Carmen was completing her junior year." All three engagements occurred during the 1963 holiday season. Christmas Eve Steve gave a diamond to Pat after dinner with the Shumways in Tremonton. John Pingree gave Carmen her engagement ring after Christmas Eve dinner at his sister's home. A few days after Christmas, John Jr. flew to California and proposed to Margery Sabine on New Year's Eve. All planned to have their weddings take place "as soon as school is out." Orpha recalls, "As the school year was winding down, the social phase of this situation gained momentum. There were parties galore, not only for these three couples but for many of their friends who were also getting married. "One activity was a little more practical than the others; John challenged each couple to prepare a meal for the rest of us; that would include the six prospective brides and grooms, Paul and his parents and Mom, a total of ten. He gave them $10 (remember this was 1964), plus anything they could find around our house. It turned out to be one of the greatest experiences we had, full of humor, resourcefulness, and a chance to get better acquainted. John gave each couple a prize; Marge and John received The Joys of Cooking, and the other two couples received Teflon muffin tins and cookie sheets (the current rage)." "Spring of 1964," recalls Carmen, "was the time Mother and Dad had planned some remodelling projects on the house. The plans were drawn and agreements made with various workmen to have the large new front porch and Dad's garden room completed in time for my announcement tea in May. However, the spring rains seemed endless, putting the project way behind. The tea was held in the midst of construction and guests walked up a plank to get into the house. Dad saved the day by calling Brown Floral - workmen arrived the morning of the party with artificial grass, tan bark and loads of potted geraniums. It looked great!
