ran for President of the Associated Boys of East High. The campaign was centered on a western theme, and the candidate painted a big sign on a Coalville cowhide which he stretched on a pole frame. However, the hit of the campaign that year at East was the fantastic array of western vests, fashioned from old flour sacks by 'Mom' (Sweeten) and decorated by Dad. Each vest was an 'original' which included a cartoon of some farm animal and an accompanying slogan, such as a pig digging in the dirt with the words, 'Rootin' for Boyden' printed in Dad's distinctive writing. "Dad was a great sport about doing things that would add to the humor of a particular occasion. He once accompanied Mother to a Primary General Board costume party dressed as Alice in Wonderland. O n another occasion, he dressed as Betsy Ross for a photograph in the Bonneville Stake newspaper advertising the Bicentennial dance (John Pingree and Carmen were in charge), and then wore the same costume to take tickets at the door the night of the dance. O n an earlier occasion, Dad was to accompany Mother on one of her many speaking engagements during the time she was working in Cub Scouting. When it was time to leave, Dad appeared in the kitchen wearing an old sweater and a Cub Scout neckerchief and hat. Dad enjoyed telling about attending one Cub meeting with Mother where they were introduced as 'Sister Boyden and her lovely husband.' "Dad had a real pride in his heritage. He compiled short histories of his ancestors and was the instigator of several Boyden family reunions for the descendants of Charles Boyden. A picture of his greatgrandfather, Charles Boyden, hung in the den. Upon return from a float trip down the Colorado River with John Jr. in 1952, he had a ten-day growth of beard. Dad meticulously shaved his beard to match that of his greatgrandfather in the oil portait, and he parted his hair on the same side. To add the finishing touch, he put on a bow tie - a little askew, as in the painting - and then brought the picture up from the basement. He hung it in the living room, sat down in front of it, and then asked each one of his children to come in individually to see whom we thought he looked like!
