John wanted to go to the horse country around Lexington, Kentucky, but the boys were obviously anxious to get home, so they proceeded through West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas-Missouri, then Colorado and home August 2nd. Mom and Gramp Sweeten were waiting up for the arrival. Paul has another memory of the trip: "Dad was very proud of his new Leica camera and, in his usual painstaking fashion, took many rolls of film, each shot being carefully measured and all adjustments made. Mother claimed he posed in front of every statue and historical spot east of the Mississippi. As fate would have it, part of the shutter malfunctioned, cutting off the upper ?4 of every picture. To Dad's great disappointment, the entire trip was memorialized by several slide boxes of perfectly exposed feet." In addition to the big trip east, there were earlier vacations to Jackson Hole, Montana, Canada/Washington, D.C. However, vacations did not offer the only opportunities for a change of pace. The children recall that, "Although he was very busy, Dad had a phenomenal ability to make significant use of a very brief period of time. Usually, his only free time was five minutes before dinner," which might be spent in a nap "on the specially made long couch in the living room. He could work up a good snore in less than 60 seconds. He didn't particularly appreciate kids jumping on his stomach or sneaking up and tickling his face with a piece of grass or a feather. Despite these interruptions, he could revive himself completely in these fiveminute cat naps. "Other times he would use the few minutes before dinner to work in the garden. He didn't often have time to change clothes, but would get a cultivator and do a section of the garden in his suit in that few minutes. When he had more time he would change into his bib overalls for serious work. He eventually became famous locally for this garb. The overalls appeared on various bodies at Ward productions and fraternity parties. 'Whenever we did something which was unacceptable, rather than use physical force Dad would just look terribly hurt. Each of us would have preferred a beating to that look of disappointment. With Mother it was a different story - she believed in swift and sure justice1
