Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
running mate) and others in the hall. We went to Senator Church's office with Verda. Everyone was very cordial. We then went to the Senate Gallery, watched a while, Senator Javits of New York was speaking, no one listening. John went to the House Office Building and we went to the Library of Congress, then to Supreme Court. We all then went to the Department of the Interior and visited with Rex Lee, an official at Interior. (Many years later John and Orpha called on him in American Samoa where he was Governor.) Then we went to the hotel. John and the kids swam and 1caught up on the washing. Bill Marriott came in and visited with us while we were eating. He said he would make a reservation for us at Williamsburg." Saturday, July 27th: 'Today we toured the Lincoln, then Jefferson Memorial, then the Washington Monument, and the Smithsonian, then started for Williamsburg. We stopped at Mt. Vernon, then proceeded on to Richmond. We didn't stop, but enjoyed driving through the city. Our accommodations at Wiliamsburg were only slightly terrific - Rockefeller money - more luxurious than Maniotts. We all went in the beautiful swimming pool for a short time. We went out for hamburgers while kids watched T.V. Tomorrow we will see the restored village. We appreciated Marriott's arrangements." Sunday, July 28th: "Buses took us to the restored area. They have done a remarkable job of restoring an entire village. You certainly get a feeling for 18th Century living. Public buildings, shops and homes equally interesting. We had a dinner-lunch at the cafeteria that included chicken and blueberries, then drove to Monticello, to find it closed. We found the church with some difficulty. Everyone was very friendly - even offered beds for some of us. We found a tourist home, got the car greased, had a sandwich, then to bed, tired." Monday, July 29th: 'We got to Monticello early and spent three hours at that most unusual and beautiful estate. We were impressed by the talent and ingenuity of Thomas Jefferson. John got the fever of fiing up our place in the colonial manner - it would be nice, but expensive. We are now on our way home. We passed the University of Virginia, then through Lexington and saw Stonewall Jackson's home. We drove through the beautiful Allegheny Mountains - slow driving but wonderful scenery."
