They had a steak fry in their back yard, attended an Episcopal study group, all of which were interesting for him." Monday, Iuly 15th: "Still in New York, we got off to a rather late start but made the day count. We ran into Art Nelson, Dick Paul, and other missionaries near the hotel again, then took the boat trip around Manhattan Island (3 hours at $2.50 each) and it was wonderful. We passed the Statue of Liberty very close by - thrilling. Our clever guide kept us well posted. John took many pictures. On our return, we took a cab to the Empire State Building - towering at 102 stories - as always a great experience. The kids seemed most impressed with the whole thing. We took a cab back to the hotel, had dinner, then went to Brooklyn via subway, where the Dodgers licked Milwaukee 20 to 4. Lots of home runs, a game made to order for Dodger fans. Home via subway and to bed, after family prayers. Everyone retired happy for the day's activities." Tuesday, July 16th, New York: "We got up late, as usual, this traveling is hard work. We took in a T.V. show 'Stand up and Be Counted': corny but interesting to observe. We went to the dining room for breakfast. The boys were asked to put on jackets but found a fountain counter instead. Then off to the U.N. - breathtakingly beautiful - where we had a Persian guide. A fabulous building but, sorry, nothing going on. Then we went to the Mission Home in a very fashionable Fifth Avenue location. The Jacobsens showed us through the home, where Florence's touch was quite evident. Brother and Sister Harold B. Lee were staying there and we had a nice visit with them. Ted and Florence seem quite happy here and I know they're doing a good job. Paul was taken with the private elevator. We went by bus back to the hotel, had a quick meal, then went to the movie 'Around the World in 80 Days' and thoroughly enjoyed it. We picked up tickets for 'Lil Abner,' (current Broadway hit) and arrived at the hotel late, where we ate oranges, a mango and chestnuts, then to bed after a big day." Wednesday, July 17th, New York: "We slept late, as usual. John Jr. went off on his own to Cornell Medical School, saw Dick Middleton who showed him around, then interviewed a man in the admission office. We've about concluded he must come east to medical
