Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
their work with handicapped Cubs. LaVern (Parmley) and I spoke and seemed to be well received. We then went to a Howard Johnson motel, the kids had a swim, and we had our dinner, watched T.V. and went to bed, tired and ready for a good rest. I was impressed with the leaders of the Scout movement - men of means and prominence." Thursday, July 11th: "We were up early but not early enough to be on time for the Mormon breakfast at 7:30. Everyone was there: Brothers Harold B. Lee and Delbert L. Stapley, the MIA people, Florence Jacobsen, Mary Dewey Waldron, Pres. Bechtel and wife, etc. Loo Roberts did a good job in setting it up. Instead of going to opening meeting, I went on tour to Independence Hall, Christ Church, etc., John Jr. and Paul went to the Navy Yard, then we all came back together for lunch. The kids then went to the Franklin Institute and Academy of Natural Science. John and I attended meetings and found the discussion interesting. The kids took the car and returned to the motel, absolutely bushed! John and 1attended dinner and went home (to the motel) via train and taxi, also bushed, at midnight. The dinner and program were stupendous. Henry Cabot Lodge was the speaker. The music was wonderful - the chorus, the Air Force Strings, etc., all well done! Don Jesperson saved us a wonderful table. Lavern, Edna, Mrs. Lee, W. Stevenson, etc., sat with us -noisy and smoky ." Friday, July 12th: "We were not up early enough to catch the scheduled tours. I arranged for tickets, went to meetings, etc., while John and the kids saw points of interest. The luncheon program was very interesting, with the President of Brandeis University as speaker. The National Court of Honor was interesting, then we were off to Valley Forge. "The campground was a thrilling sight. We visited with the Utah contingent - saw Jimmy Backman (a member of Yale I1 Ward). Region XI1 served us box lunches, then we were off to the arena, after stopping at headquarters to see Bud Bennett, National Director of Cub Scouting. He and his wife Hope walked to the arena with us. It was perfectly beautiful to see the Scouts come over the hill and fill the arena. The Valley Forge story was enacted, Vice President Nixon
