Family Man
-hated to interrupt Carmen's 100 percent - but we had such heavy traffic that it turned out best we didn't. John Jr. drove all the way he was anxious to get to Chicago. When we came to Evanston and Northwestern University, he was anxious for us to see where he and Woody Moyle had spent the summer after their high school junior year at a Debate Clinic. He found Mr. Miller, his counselor, and arranged for the men in the party to stay at the fraternity house. Carmen and I spent $10 at a hotel (remember$10 went a lot further in 1957 than it does now). We went to the University beach on Lake Michigan, then took Mr. Miller to dinner. I telephoned Faye Pederson Switz, an old friend of mine from Utah State. We will have dinner with hcr tomorrow if we can." Monday July 8th: "It was raining, so we gave Chicago the by-pass. We drove along Lake Shore Drive but did not go into the city. I phoned again, and we gave up seeing Faye. We soon got onto the Indiana Turnpike and got over the state in a hurry - it hooked up with the Ohio toll road and we had a fast and pleasant drive. It rained much of the time, was cool, and we made it to Youngstown, Ohio, where we found a nice $18 motel and good food. We talked to Mom (Sweeten)on the phone - sounded as though everything was O.K., and everyone well. We are having a good time. If we can keep the kids rested and well fed, that seems to do the trick. We are impressed with the speedways and wish they were cross<ountry. It was good to finally get out of the rain." Tuesday and Wednesday, July 9th and 10th: 'We found a laundry, for $1.20 got two loads done. It was time! We had the car greased, etc. and headed for Philadelphia. (This was the site of the National Cub Scout Committee meeting held in conjunction with the National Scout Jamboree at Valley Forge.) It was hot, so we looked forward to the arrival. We drove by Valley Forge and saw many Scout tents already set up. We found the center of town and the Sheraton without too much trouble. It is new, very modem and plush looking. We cleaned up, ate, took a little walk and hit the sack. Wednesday morning I got a $7.50 hairdo. The kids wanted to go swimming, which was not included in our $42 per day budget. Our Cub Scout meeting was interesting and mutually helpful. A North Carolina woman reported
