Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
Iuly 4th: "We finally took off on the trip we have looked forward to for so long. Mom (Sweeten) fed us breakfast, we had our pictures taken by the loaded car, and we were away by 8 a.m. We stopped in Coalville for a few matters, then continued on. Our luck held, we had good weather for travel, and everyone was congenial (could be that our family prayer helped). We arrived in Cheyenne, our goal, at 6:45 p.m. We had a good swim in a pool all to ourselves at a lovely motel. This was topped off with a big meal and by all going to bed in fine spirits. The first day out was very successful - and expensive. It cost us $35 to eat and sleep tonight. Having a wonderful trip." Iuly 5th: "We got as far as Omaha - had a wonderful place to stay - we went swimming again in a f i e pool. We had a good meal, and then to bed. The day's drive was very interesting, hot but bearable. A traffic officer pulled up beside us and said we ran a red light, which none of us believed. We saw some buffalo. Everyone is in a pretty good mood. John, Jr. informed us that he was having a good time and that he found the company quite congenial, possibly a surprise to him (then 19 years old, and the eldest of the children)." Saturday, July 6th: ''We made it to Cedar Rapids, Iowa - late getting away from Omaha because we had the car greased, bought trousers, etc. We thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful fann country in Iowa. It looked just like the Country Gentlemen ads. We visited the beautiful campus of Ames University - took pictures of EX house. (John Jr. had recently pledged Sigma Chi at the University of Utah.) The house in Laramie was so ratty that we didn't hesitate long. This one at Ames is a beauty. We also visited the site of Winter Quarters today, and walked up to the Mormon cemetery, took some pictures of Fairbank's lovely statue of the Pioneer couple burying their child, then crossed the new Mormon Bridge into Nebraska. It has been very hot traveling - we've really had it - ready to fall apart - but the day ended very nicely with a lovely meal. We called at Albert Stuarts' at Newhall - but he wasn't home. We visited with his neighbor at his 'ranch.' (John used to buy Chester White hogs from him, and they became friends through their business dealings.)
