Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
happy and agreeable." Naturally, one of the favorite family activities was when John and Orpha would take the children for ice cream cones. John would always get a lick at each of the cones to keep it from "dripping." This went on for some time until Stephen finally broke the tradition by protesting, "It isn't dripping, Daddy!" In later years while visiting his friend and dermatologist C. ONeal Rich, John was told that in order to clear up a skin imtation he would have to restrict his consumption of dairy products. John replied, "Doc, if this means I have to give up ice cream, I'm ready to gol" John, along with Orpha, supported the children in their interests. He went to every football game the boys played in, when he was in town. This sometimes meant 2 or 3 games a week. He allowed John, Jr. to begin flying lessons while he was still in high school, to enter the boxer dog in a show (which incidentally won first place, novice), and to tie flies. He helped Steve design a chicken coop and arrange for someone to help him build it. He spent hours going over catalogues with Steve to order the baby chicks from Murray MacMurray Poultry Company, and eggs to be incubated in the basement. He moved the cars out in the snow so the chicks could be kept under brooding lamps in the garage until spring. Likewise, he arranged for Carmen to take typing and shorthand lessons in the summer, then hired her to work in the law office to gain some secretarial experience. He often brought her a cup and saucer when he went away on trips, to form a collection she treasures. A storage room was packed a little tighter to make space for Paul's ham radio, and time was spent sharing a photography hobby with Paul. When Paul was younger, countless early mornings were spent "talking burro," because he wanted one after his many visits to the reservations. Paul was delighted one Christmas morning to follow a string from his stocking, through the house, outside and around the comer rlght into the face of a Palomino pony. Carmen recalls, "Stamps, birds, white mice, aquariums and a multitude of other hobbies were not only allowed but shared with Dad. A great deal of credit is due to Mother for putting up with all
