like to put into your biography," John placed as number one in the list that he would like to be recognized as "a son, brother, husband and father who was loved as he loved." The one thing he selected that he most wanted to be remembered for was "the patriarch of a successful family unit" (See complete questionnaire in Appendix). Family Life Orpha and John were good and supportive parents. They enjoyed their children very much and supplied a home for them where there was warmth and companionship. In their church and school experiences the children never doubted that they had the strength of the family behind them. Family vacations sometimes found them in Indian country; after all, this came to be an interest not only of the father but also of the other family members. Wherever they were going, at the vacation site, or returning to their home, events were organized in such a way that something was happening that was interesting and challenging to family members. Asked about the individual characteristics of the children, Orpha said: "John Jr. was a very independent little man and handled himself pretty well, so anything he could do, of course, we let him do. I used to worry before his little brother was born because I thought 'I can't possibly love another child like I do him.' But what do you know? They bring the love with them. Steve was his own personality and had a twinkle in his eye. You didn't know exactly which way he would jump, and he was a charmer. Well, the two of them together really led me a meny chase, 1'11 have to admit.
