Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
D.C., gave breadth and sophistication to the strength that came from the pioneer roots and family solidarity. Concerning their courtship Orpha said, "It turned out we had a lot in common. John was interesting to me, and most important he was interested in me. He was not dull, to say the least, and had an unusually wide range of interests and hobbies. We found many things about which we could laugh together, and 1 really believe that our sense of humor pulled us through many unpleasant situations. I always said that, if my parents had to choose between him and me, they would have taken John. That tells you something." They were married at the Boyden home in Coalville on May 17, 1936. Orpha recalls: "An old friend of the family, John J. Shumway, (Pat's grandfather) officiated at the ceremony, with just a few friends and the families present. He was a fine musician and played Stardust as background music for us. It was a big hit in those days and it became 'our song.' Every time we hear Stardust now, almost 50 yearslater, we remember that day." A little later: "We went to Denver and Colorado Springs. John had a case in the Circuit Court. We would meet the Judge every now and then over the years, and he would always mention how young and happy we were when he saw us just after our marriage. We came back from our wedding trip and started to build this house. We moved into it just about a year later." That was Orpha's and John's home on Uintah Circle which became their first and permanent home. John Sterling Jr. was born December 11, 1937; Stephen George, May 3,1940; Carmen Sweeten, March 22,1943; and Paul Walter, November 8,1946. On February 23, 1940, John and Orpha went to the temple with John Jr. and were sealed as a family unit. Orpha's mother and father and John's mother went with them; the Sweetens also received their endowments. When asked to "Name the five most important things you would
