Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
everywhere." A brochure prepared as a handout refers to John as "Vigorous, Qualified, Experienced," and mentions as assets: "Ten years experience in practice of law; Owner and operator of a farm in Summit; Active Church Worker; and able and convincing speaker, with the initiative and energy of youth and the experience and judgment of years." John decided against running for the U S . Senate in order to avoid factionalism with the party, and Abe Murdock gained the Senate seat, to be replaced by Arthur Watkins, Republican, in 1946. Involvement with Democratic Party politics did not keep John from devoting more than full time to his assignment as Assistant U S . Attorney, to the legal profession, to his continuing interest in Scouting, to active participation in church work, and to his role as husband and father, by 1946, of four children. Reflecting on the decade since the Young Democrats were organized nationally, John wrote for publication in the Utah Young Democrat, August, 1941: "We must confidently look into the future with the energy of youth, but let us utilize our few precious years of experience. Today, as ten years ago, government sorely needs young and healthy views." At the death of FDR in 1945, John was asked to participate in memorial services held at the Utah State Capitol. He was frequently invited to be keynote speaker at various county Democratic conventions, and decided, when he was no longer "Fenced out of politics by the Hatch Act" to "yield to his backers' urging" and become a candidate for the state chairmanship of the Democratic Party in 1946. Calvin Rampton was also in the running for the state party leadership, and a Salt Lake paper said of the two candidates: They are both popular with the rank and file of the democratic party.
