Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
headline 'Young Democrats Hear G.O.P. Scored," carried the following quote from Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt of New York urging the audience to ''be Democrats by conviction as well as by inheritance" and that on them "will rest a large responsibility of maintaining our party belief in favor of things as they ought to be. We can lose victory only if we fall back to a conservative satisfaction of things as they are." Two fundamentals agreed upon by the Young Democrats were, "first, the urgent need for more idealism in government, and second, the necessity for more active participation in politics by young people." While he was in the East, John was able to spend some time seeing the sights in New York City, as well as in Washington. His scrapbook contains programs for "worship services" of the Riverside Church and the Trinity Church for March 6,1932. After John returned to Salt Lake, the local papers carried articles concerning his election to office by the National Young Democratic Club, and also included the information that Chiyo Thomas, daughter of Professor Elbert D. Thomas (soon to be Senator), of the University of Utah had been named regional vice chairman of the national organization. A program for a "National Conference Dinner" of the Young Democratic Club of America, June 27, 1932, LaSalle Hotel, Chicago, Ill., carries the names of the national officers including "John Boyden, Secretary," and shows the president Tyre Taylor presiding. Apparently it was on this occasion that James Roosevelt, FDR's eldest son, became treasurer of the organization. Meanwhile John continued his active involvement with both the national organization of Young Democrats and the regular Utah State Democratic Committee. Delbert M. Draper became state chairman and John secretary of the Utah State Democratic Committee. During the summer of 1932 "approximately 100 Young Democrats from all Utah counties gathered in the Newhouse Hotel to form a statewide organization. John was elected president. In early December, 1932, the national officers of the Young Democrats of America met with the President-Elect Franklin D. Roosevelt
