CHAPTER THREE
Christmas, 1956 The season gives reason for reflection and resoloe. For me and m y family this has been a memorable year. Never before in the space of a feu, months have we visited with SO many friends both old aid new. The plans we all shared, looking to election day, were not succe~sful.But luoking beyond that day our continued vigilance could well be a strong influence for good in the government of this state. I am tmly thankful that I feel no blight of failure or sting of disappointment. The loyalty and devotion of those who shared the load fill m y heart with nratitude abundant for this Christmas and all the days that may yetbe mine. John 5. Boyden Letter to supporters of his 7956 Gubernatorial Campaim
1930s enabled John to devote considerable time to politics. In October, 1931, thirty young men and women met in the Hooper Building to organize the Young People's Democratic Club. The officers elected were John S. Bovden, president, Chiyo Thomas, vice president, and Virginia Rishel, secretary. John attended the national convention of young Democrats which met March 3 and 4 in 1932 in Washington, D.C. With representatives from 27 states present. Tyre Taylor of Raleigh, N.C., was elected president, Elizabeth Wheeler of Butte, Mont., daughter of Senator Burton K. Wheeler, vice president, and John S. Boyden of Salt Lake City, secretary. John said in an interview with a New Y o r k Times reporter: "Roosevelt is Utah's candidate," and added that the silver question was of paramount interest in his state.
