Three Score and Ten i ~Retrospect l
United States Attorney and the Attorney General, Homer Cummings, appointed me as Dan's assistant. Dan later asked me why I did not come back to see him between the time 1 first approached him concerning the appointment and the day I was named. With complete candor and absolute conviction, I told him that I knew he was a man of his word and no follow-up was necessary. Dan was of unimpeachable character and supported me in everything I did. When Orpha and I were contemplating building our home on Westminster Avenue, Dan bought several adjoining lots to support us in a petition we were making to the City. The fact that we later decided to build in Uintah Circle and Dan sold his lots at a profit, as he was wont to do, did not detract from the spirit of his customary support or from our gratitude for his helpfulness. I served for about a year as Assistant District Attorney with a hold-over from the previous administration, Ed Jensen, until Mr. Shields found a person satisfactory to him to fill the other assistant position. Scott Matheson of Cedar City received the appointmcnt. Ed was capable and helpful. He became a very good friend. Scott and I worked together for many years, until I resigned. He said many times that we worked harmoniously in adjoining offices with an open door between us, year in and year out. Scott and his wife, Adele, were our close companions. No one could have been more enjoyable, helpful and trustworthy than this delightful couple. Two statements made about this time identify John as a loyal Democrat. When asked for his opinion on the repeal of the 18th Amendment, he said: "There is no question in my mind but that we should have repeal. It is one of the fundamental principles of democratic government that popular opinion must favor any law if it is to be successfully enforced. There has grown to be such a disrespect for prohibition laws that it is impossible to enforce them, and for that reason there should be no delay in effecting their repeal. I think the American public is tired of financing the racketeers."
