Three Score and Ten in Retrospect Scouting Associations Along with John's other involvements during the late 1920s and 1930s, he continued his interest in Scouting and served as a scoutmaster. He completed a "minimum course" in scoutmastership at Coalville and "approved and "advanced courses later in Salt Lake City. He was still a scoutmaster when he was married in 1936 and continued to be involved with Scouting in various capacities the rest of his life, eventually being presented with the Silver Beaver Award. It was through Scouting that John became acquainted with a special group of boys (and their parents) who became his lifelong friends. At the time John was Scoutmaster in the old 12th-13th Ward, he had as members of his troop the Asahina brothers (Gungi and Tomizo) and Nobuo Kato. When they went to summer camp in the Uinta Mountains, it was only natural that John invited the Japanese troop, under the direction of Scoutmaster Cy Walsh and Assistant Scoutmaster Sen Nishiyama, to join with his group. They had a wonderful time together and repeated this the following summer. Members of the Japanese troop included Kay Nakashima, Fujio Iwasaki, Ichiro Doi, and Dan Oniki. John's relationship with these boys lasted a lifetime. They always called him "Chief." John was a source of help to many of these boys as they matured and started their own careen. He was always available for counseling. Even forty years later one of his favorite activitics included visiting with Gungi Asahina at his cleaning establishment. The family favorite was going to the Pagoda restaurant. After a superb meal they enjoyed visiting the proprietor, Fujio Iwasaki. John never tired of taking credit for having taught "Fudge" how to cook at Boy Scout camp. The Pagoda will always be called "Fudge's" in the Boyden family. Assistant US. Attorney, 1933-1946 John was well known in the Democratic Party before Franklin D. Roosevelt became President. While Dan B. Shields was U.S. Attorney, John Boyden and Scott Matheson were his assistants from 1933 to 1946. Utah had William H. King and Elbert D. Thomas as
