Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
During John's college years at the University of Utah it was possible to enter law school after the completion of three years of undergraduate work. John thus began college in 1924 and law school in 1927. He graduated from the university in 1929 with a law degree. He continued with debating at the university and "took every course they had in speech arts," and entered many oratorical contests. He traveled extensively with the debate team. Among his debate partners were Obert C. Tanner, Joseph G. Jeppson, John K. Edmunds and John Carlisle. John was very active in student affairs, serving as President of the Senior Class and as a member of both Skull & Bones and Owl & Key. At graduation of the Class of '28, John was selected a member of Beehive Club, the honorary organization for outstanding scholars and leaders. In addition to John's debating and other extracurricular activities, he had a short-lived career on the track team. His long legs were wellsuited for hurdling. He took up this sport at the university and did very well at it. The coach, anxious to develop his great athletic ability, put him on a routine of exercises. One of them was the "inverted bicycle" where he was required to lie down on a wrestling mat, lift his hips straight above his head supported by his arms, and to do a bicycle pump in the air. A lot of weight was on the back of his neck. The large number of bicycle pumps assigned by John's coach began to wear on his neck. Since the wrestling mat was not exactly sanitary, he soon developed an infection. A large carbuncle soon appeared on the back of his neck and had to be surgically removed, causing great pain and ending his burgeoning athletic career.
Law School
John was serious about his studies and worked to meet the new challenges required of him. The Law School faculty at that time included Dean William H. Leary, A. Ladru Jensen, and Willis W. Ritter. They also had teachers from downtown, Henry D. Moyle and Hamilton Gardner. The law school records show thirteen graduates in the Class of 1929; John Sterling Boyden, Louis H. Callister, Rue L.
