John S. Boyden Convocation Address University of Utah Law Schuol June 10,1967
VEN BEFORE HIGH SCHOOL JOHN HAD DISCOVered that he enjoyed expressing his thoughts by speaking. He said that he often told his dad and mother that he would be glad when he grew up so that "I could speak and hit my fist upon the table." He said he thought all g o d speakers pounded the table or pulpit with their fists when they wanted to be emphatic. (See appendix, My Great Ambition by John S . Boyden, December 18, 1924.) He further states: "Strange as it may seem, I was about to be graduated from high school before I realized that I could not make a living by just talking. After careful consideration, I decided that I wanted to become a lawyer, because a great deal of a lawyer's work is speaking. Last September I registered in the School of Law at the University of Utah. One of the first subjects that I registered for was public speaking. And thus I intend to carry out my desire for public speaking throughout my college career."
