Coalville Roots play. On the night of the performance, his mother was surprised and furious to discover Maxine standing in the chorus in an old sack while her costume was worn by the leading lady. To think the director would have the nerve to switch costumes galled her!
Growing Up

During John's junior and senior years of high school he was on the debating team. He found that debating increased his vocabulary, improved his delivery and helped to develop his reasoning power. All of these would later be an advantage to him in the legal profession. However, at this time John was also very interested in chemistry. At the age of 74, John recalled a particular experience while pursuing this hobby: To test for hydrogen gas, one mixes certain chemicals and then puts them into a flame to see if a loud "bark will result. One day at home I had a big jar that I was going to perform this experiment with. I had the jar in my hand and I guess I was in too big a hurry putting it into the flame. And boy! I took it away quick! It seemed to rattle the whole house! Mother came running in and wondered if I was still alive. A family story explains the eventual choice of law rather than chemistry as a profession. During John's high school days a phrenologist appeared on a program at the high school. John, among others, was called to the stage from the audience for a demonstration. The phrenologist, after feeling the "bumps" on John's head, questioned him about his plans for the future. When John told of his interest in chemistry, the phrenologist responded negatively to the idea and said he saw much greater involvement with social endeavors in John's potential. Frank Allen, one of John's high school teachers, spoke up from the audience and said John had the highest grade in the school in "current events."
