Three Score and Ten in Retrospect

In another Scouting venture, John and others made a camp on the side hill in Boyden's Grove (the bottom of the ledge at the top of the hill just west of town). Near a spring in this grove of trees they established "Camp Boyce," named for William C. Boyce, the founder of the Scouting movement in the United States. Like most of the significant events of his youth, trips to Camp Boyce were faithfully recorded on film and kept in a photo album. One picture showing John, his brother Everett, his sister Maxine, cousins Dean and Shirley Davis and other compatriots, is mounted above a caption which reads, "They took their breakfast to the ledge." As an indication of his loyalty to the United States, John accepted a "commission" as corporal and squad commander in the "Junior Yanks" and had pledged: "I shall always bear true faith and allegiance to my country and to my flag and I shall serve faithfully and honestly in every endeavor I undertake." This unusual love of country was always part of John's personality. In later years when he added a sunroom to his colonial home, the ironwork around the newly-created balcony was a replica of that found at Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, his favorite American. Also, above the front door is a decorative American eagle, and an impressive flagpole stands in front of the home, with the flags of the United States and Utah flying practically every day of the year. Two generations of successful Boyden men had given John examples of industry and public service: Grandfather John, in addition to acquiring the property referred to, had been a loyal churchman and missionary, a teacher, assessor and collector for Morgan and Summit Counties, selectman and recorder for Summit County, member of the Board of Education, Mayor of Coalville for three terms, and enrolling clerk for the State Legislature, Utah House of Representatives, four terms. Grandfather John had a reputation for the perfection and beauty of his penmanship. Many official documents of the State of Utah and Summit County are in his writing.
