Preface
Three Score and Ten in Retrospect was the title I selected for this, my personal history. The title seemed appropriate when I commenced to assemble clippings, letters and other pertinent materials that had accumulated through the years, for I was then seventy years of age. But time would not stand still nor new experiences cease as I attempted to select and classify a conglomeration of surprising "packrat" proportions, plus endeavoring to wind up professional business and nurse the ills that age was beginning to impose upon me. My ambition far exceeded my ability to carry on the busy l i e to which I had become accustomed. With all the love I have had and will always hold for my sweet mother and dear father and other departed loved ones, particularly including my second mother, Amy, my father's sister, who lived with our family all the days of my life until her passing, 1 make only stinted reference to them but enough to unmistakably connect me with my progenitors. In sorting the pleasant memory-joggers of my hoarded miscellany I find that my greatest source of satisfaction and contentment comes from the goals and compassionate actions of my eternal companion, sweetheart and wife, Orpha, and from the outlook and performances of our sons and daughter. But these are a part of their personal histories so I am reluctantly surrendering them. The same is true of materials relating to my living brother and sister who are always there in time of need with a love generated in our parents' family. We are individuals with freedom of choice and recipients of the certain eternal blessings that result from correct choices and decisions. Nevertheless, whether deserving or not, I bask in the reflected blessings through those I love. The only thing that prevents me from saying that each of our children in selecting a spouse has made a better choice than I could have made for them is the fact that I want no unwarranted inferences drawn from such a statement that would raise any question concerning my own capabilities in choosing my own wife.
