Introduction
Dad began assembling and organizing resource materials for his personal history in 1976. Unfortunately, due to the volume of the material, his demanding schedule and subsequent ill health, he was unable to complete his task. We have attempted to finish this undertaking by writing about what we judged to be the most significant events and currents in a very full life. In so doing, we have followed as closely as possible the format Dad had planned. The preface he composed for the book is found on the following page. We are indebted to Dr. S. Lyman Tyler, Director, American West Center, and to Dr. Gregory C. Thompson, Assistant Director of Special Collections Department, University of Utah Library, who assisted him in thoroughly and thoughtfully reviewing seemingly endless files, newspaper clippings, tapes, journals, interview transcripts and other references. Without Lyman's painstaking, skillful efforts in developing the "skeleton" for this book, we may never have reached a finished product. For his sensitive handling of the material and his gentle urging we are most grateful. We express appreciation for the keen personal interest, characteristic good taste and creative suggestions of Dr. Gerald R. Sherratt, President of Southern Utah State College and a long time friend, who has overseen the publication of this volume. The purpose of this book is to preserve for the family the record and memory of one whom we consider to be a very remarkable individual. It is our hope that the inspiration and motivation we experienced in associating with him will live on through these pages in future generations.
