Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
to do. And he always had the courage to stand up for what he believed in. I don't know if anybody can really fill his shoes, to be able to earn the trust and confidence of the tribal elders is no easy task. We can only say as it has been said already, that he was a great inspiration to the Hopi people and other people who knew him. We can hope and aspire to his example as a friend and as a leader. And we are grateful to the Great Spirit and the Giver of the Breath of Life that he saw fit to provide this great leader and friend who has dedicated so much of his life, his very energy and his being, to a people that he loved, and we feel a special privilege to be here today to pay tribute in his memory, and our prayers go with him as he joins his fathers. Talk: Elderlames E. Fawt I feel the sweet spirit which has been in these services, rejoice with all of you in the choice fellowship which is gathered here. I am fulfiling a request which was laid upon me by John some weeks ago as I came to his home. It was a beautiful day. John was dressed and seated on the front porch. As I came up he had his usual warm, relaxed, gracious smile, and we had a wonderful visit. I think I enjoyed it more than John because he soon tired somewhat and Orpha asked if he should like to go inside and he indicated that he did. I was privileged and honored to give John a blessing. Under the inspiration of heaven, great blessings were pronounced on John, which I believe, Orpha, have been substantially fulfilled. The 116th Psalm says: "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his Saints." And we've heard something of these precious relationships. Mine was also of that category. I can't remember when I first met John, but a long time before, 1 remember my father telling me about young Johnny Boyden over in the U S . Attorney's office. That was many years ago. And I enjoyed being in the practice of the law as a young man and coming under his influence. And there were some of us of both political parties who thought that John would make an excellent governor of this state. 1 don't think John sought political office - it sought him. He was of that stature, and John was then in his younger years and secured the nomination in the
