his Indian friends. The bear, a warrior figure, was a sign of courage, a reminder to fight like a bear does for her cubs. Big John was always faithful to these admonishments. He never wavered, even in the face of adversity. A short time ago Big John was given a distinction that no one to my knowledge has ever been given by the Hopi Indians. They passed a resolution commemorating the passing of his fortieth year of faithful and dedicated service to the Hopi Tribe and the Hopi people as their Indian claims and general counsel, saying that for nearly half of this period of time Mr. Boyden unselfishly and willingly expended his time and energy on behalf of the tribe without consideration of compensation, and in a manner far beyond the call of duty. As a result of Mr. Boyden's (Big John's) labors, the council said, the Hopi Tribe has regained vast areas of ancestral lands and is on the verge of even greater accomplishments as a result of Big John's work. The Council said that Big John was able to accomplish this great work under the most adverse conditions, yet in faithiul compliance with the tradition of the tribal elders, among whom he has now earned a special place. The council resolved that in expressing its most grateful appreciation to John S. Boyden, Sr. for his faithful and dedicated service to the Hopi people, and for his unswerving friendship with the members of the Hopi Tribe, in recognition of his unrelenting service to the Hopi people defending and protecting their ancestral lands and traditions, that he is by this resolution hereby accorded the special distinction of honorary member of the Hopi Tribal Council and honorary Hopi tribal elder. For 22 years I've known Big John and I've learned many many things from him. During the time when relations between Indian people and non-Indian people have become very critical at a time when there is a lot of distrust, Big John has been able to earn that special trust and confidence because of his dedication to the cause of his Indian brothers. The old elders would ask me, 'When is la via coming again?" to talk with them. He spent hours discussing the plans of the tribe for the future. I can't say that we always agreed with him but we always knew what was in his mind, what he thought was right, and what he thought was in the best interests of his friends
