Three Score und Ten in Retrospect
present Hopi leaders, could be here to pay tribute to this great man who has done so much for the Hopi and for other Indian peoples over the years. Chairman Sekaquaptewa has devoted much of his own life fighting for Indian causes. He is presently in his second elected term as the chairman of the Hopi Tribe and he also is serving presently as chairman of the board for Futures for Children, which is an international charitable organization dedicated to assisting children, particularly Indian children here in the western hemisphere. Now as we listen to this great Indian leader may all of us rededicate our lives to service with compassion, with integrity, with vigor and with charity, which were the hallmark of John Sterling Boyden, is my prayer in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. Talk: Abbott Sekuquaptewa I feel very humble, at the same time very much honored, to have the opportunity to say a few words in memory of a great friend, because we come today to pay tribute to the man who has been both a friend and a counselor to the Hopi Indians for nearly half a century. He was not only a friend and a counselor, he was a great leader among the Indian people. That strong bond of faith and trust that Big John, which we called him affectionately, established with the Hopi people will be long remembered by two generations of Hopi friends. Big John never hesitated to seek the advice of tribal elders and tribal leaders among whom he earned a respected place. Even in very personal matters he sought the advice of his friends. I well remember the day he asked the then chairman and vice chairman of the Hopi Tribe for guidance when he was being considered by his party for their high state office, and he accepted the advice of the tribal leaders in making his decision not to be a candidate. Such was the dedication of this great leader and friend to the people to whose interest he dedicated his life. In his office were two Hopi Indian kachina dolls that were given to him by one of the tribal eldersin the form of an admonishment. The owl, which is considered a warning figure by the Hopi Indians, was an admonishment to watch for and warn of impending danger to
