Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
photography, stamp collecting and Indianlore, and gardening, and many other things, and somehow managed to pursue them all at once, although they occasionally made conflicting demands on his time. On one occasion he entered several pigs in the Utah State Fair. He then found it necessary to go out of town on business. I believe that Mother then found the wide range of interests not so fascinating when she had to take her small children to the fair grounds twice a day to slop the hogs and clean the pens. Although many of Dad's talents were known, he had a few which were known only to some of us. He had a creative literary side which was a tradition in our family. Whenever a special occasion arose we would usually get Dad to make up a poem; then we would sit patiently while he stared into space waiting for inspiration. Later, we would ask "Dad, has the poet come?" Dad's interest in writing came early. In 1919, at the age of thirteen, he became editor of the Lone Scout Magazine called the "Coalville Tepee." His photograph albums also are reminders of the many trips he made to the hills with his camera and pen in hand. We all remember the captions on the photographs mounted so nicely in his photo albums on black pages. You can imagine under a photograph on a black page with his distinctive white writing, one of his photos was entitled, 'Where the water lilies bloom and die with but few witnesses to their lovely lives." Now this was out of a teenage boy. Another was entitled, 'Where the hush of night spends its days." I thought that this widenced a sentimentality and a desire to express himself, even as a young person, which we later came to know so well. Although many of his verses were directed toward special purposes, the ones which we came to love the most were written in an introspective mood when elements of his character came shining through. On one occasion he had gone to Washington, D.C. as he had done many many times. I believe his fist trip was in a Ford Trimotor airplane, something I wouldn't even have the courage to attempt. On one occasion he was able to secure a settlement of a long-standing difficulty for one of his clients. It had been a particularly gratifying experience and he had obtained something completely
