Talk: John S. Boyden, 1r. My brothers and sisters, I pray that I may have the spirit of the Lord to enable me to say those things which are in my heart to say this afternoon. I can't remember a time when I felt less able or less qualified to speak than I do at this time. It's my purpose to give you in some brief words intimate glimpses of Dad's life as his family saw him. His professional l i e and Church service will be primarily left to the other speakers. In behalf of the family I wish to thank everyone who has contributed to our comfort and welfare during Dad's illness. We are deeply grateful to his doctors for their very skillful and compassionate care, and especially we thank Uncle Everett and Aunt Maxine, his brother and sister, for their love and support in a difficult time. During a long period of sustained illness we have been strengthened by numerous close personal friends, and to all of you we express our heartfelt thanks. The family has always viewed Dad as an exemplar, as one whom we should emulate. His integrity and compassion for others were obvious in everything he did. He was proud of his English and Welsh heritage. His great-grandfather, Charles Boyden, emigrated from England in the early days of the Church. He later served a mission in the Sandwich Islands, which later became known as the Hawaiian Islands. Dad's grandfather, John Boyden, also came from England with his parents. He became a pharmacist and founded the John Boyden & Sons Drugstore in Coalville, Utah. Dad's mother, Ann Thomas, was as Welsh as her name suggests. Her ancestors came to America to work in the coal mines. They found the Church when they eventually came to Utah, after living for a few years in the eastern part of the country. Dad was a child of Coalville, Utah. Although he lived most of his life in Salt Lake his heart never really left Coalville nor its people, many of whom are here today. When Mother first met Dad she was extremely impressed with his wide range of interests. In addition to the law he enjoyed raising prize-winning Chester White pigs and Hereford cattle; he loved
