Remarks at Boyden Collection Dedication
UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY APRIL 19,1980
(The following remarks were written by lohit S. Boyden for the dedication ceremony of the Boyden Collection of Indian Art, sponsored b y the United Inter-Tribal Council, the Indian organization of Utah State University. Mr. Boyden was unable to attend because of health problems. The statement was read by his son, Paul W. Boyden.)
I deeply regret that I am unable to attend this ceremony. Each of you has a personal background of tradition and religion which has a great influence upon the constructive things you are doing today. I, too, have the same motivating forces. I wanted Utah State University to have our Indian art collection because it is the alma mater of my wife, Orpha Sweeten Boyden, and also of my father, Walter M. Boyden. My interest in the Indian people has always been with me. My family background and my religion have prompted me to diligently pursue their causes - first, against the encroachment of non-Indian people who forced them to change their way of life, and second, to do what I could to settle difficulties between the Indians themselves, and I worked with what I considered love and compassion for both sides. In my work as Assistant U.S. Attorney I was assigned all Indian cases in the State of Utah, but my experience involved my services with Indians of surrounding states - Idaho, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. My intimate work with and for the Indian people has taken me to many many tribes for longer than forty years. Many of my most cherished memories are of my friendships with Indian people and have also been blessed with close friendships. Our reason for depositing this collection with Utah State University, aside from our personal connection with the university, was largely prompted by the efforts of Twain Tippetts, Jeny Sherratt and Gaell Lindstrom. Later on, John Steinitz made countless trips to our hornexworking out details of labeling, transporting, exhibiting, etc. Many others helped over that rather long period and we sincerely
