Three Scow and Ten in Retrospect
won both debates. After several more contests we were again eligible to enter the state meet. The state contest was my last debate in high school. I was determined to do my best to win, but was defeated by the team that later became the state champions. The training that I received from debating increased my vocabulary, improved my delivery, and developed my reasoning power. I now realize that debating is a fascinating and helpful mental sport. Practically all of the members of our class in the North Summit High School knew that I loved to speak, and that is why I was given the chance to speak in assemblies for our class. The offices which I held in high school all required, at least a little, public speaking. The only regret which I have is that I did not take advantage of other chances that I had to talk, during my high school career. Strange as it may seem, I was about to graduate from high school before I realized that I could not make a living by just talking. After careful consideration I decided that I wanted to become a lawyer, because a great deal of a lawyer's work is speaking. Last September I registered in the School of Law at the University of Utah. One of the first subjects that I registered for was Public Speaking. And thus I intend to carry out my desire for public speaking throughout my college career. Next spring I intend to try to become a member of the Freshmen Debating Squad. If I am successful in "making the team" the experience will be of great value to me. When I have finished my "pre-legal" work at the University of Utah I intend to enter an eastern university. It is my hope that my college work will prepare me to become a good public speaker.
