Another very useful subject for which I registered was Debating. Debating is Public Speaking, but not all Public Speaking is argument. Public Speaking has many purposes. The purpose of impressiveness is secured by appealing to the emotions. The purpose entertainment is achieved by humor and telling stories. Likewise when the purpose is to convince, argument is used. The larger part of Public Speaking has for its purpose, to convince. For this reason I deemed Debating an asset to me and to any one who wishes to become a Public Speaker. 1 was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take a course in Public Speaking. The training which I was given in this class was directly on Public Speaking. We composed and delivered nomination speeches, presentation speeches and many other forms which are used in everyday. I enjoyed my study of Public Speaking more than any other subject in high school. All of my High School subjects were good broadening courses, and helped to furnish me with material to talk about. During the last part of each winter term a Debating squad was chosen to represent our high school. My junior year was the first year that 1 contested to become a member of the team. 1 worked hard on my "try out" debate and won a place on the North Summit High School Debating Squad. The team was drilled thoroughly from day to day for weeks. The businessmen of Coalville would hear the debates delivered. Each listener would hand in a list of mistakes that we had made during our argument. This sort of practice aided us for the District Dual Debates. When the division schedule was over North Summit had won. We were then ready to go to Salt Lake City to contest for the State High School Debating Championship. High School Day at the University of Utah was set for the day that we were to argue for state honors. We worked diligently to win this debate but we failed to get the judges' decision in our favor. In my senior year in high school I again tried out for the Debating Team and again was successful. The second year that I debated we were not restricted to just our district for debates. Before the division schedule started, we debated with Pleasant Grove and Davis County High Schools. Although I knew that the decisions would not make much difference to my experience I was happy to know that we had
