Three Score and Te17 in Retrospect
barrow ride after the leaves were dumped. The boys who feached scout age while their grandfather was still active were able to discuss and pass citizenship merit badges with him, gaining an appreciation for his great love of country and community senrice. Some shared happy times on the farm in Coalville. The older girls enjoyed moments working on his scrapbook and recalling important events of his life in taped conversations. Every grandchild who is old enough to remember Grandpa at all has a picture in his or her mind of this cheerful, gray-haired man sitting in his big chair in the living room or out on the front porch with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. Another indelible memory is each Christmas Eve when he would pass out all the presents after Grandma's delicious dinner and the cousins' program. At the time of John's death, Paul and Ann decided that the baby they were expecting should have the initials J.S.B., so loved by John and his grandfather. Jefferson Sterling Boyden was born nearly two months later. As time goes on, it becomes obvious that by size and temperament the proper child received the J.S.B. initials. Many memories linger in the minds of the older grandchildren. They remember their grandfather as "a hard worker," "a good example," "always polite," "funny and nice," "always told the truth and made people feel welcome," "always nice to whomever he was around," "always fun," "very smart," "never complained," "interested in sports of mine," "let me sleep over," "let me sit with him in church," "the sweetest, kindest man you could ever have," "lover of ice cream," "never got mad," "his integrity and kindness truly inspire me," "let me sit in his chair and in his lap," "charitable, gracious and enjoyable." Two grandchildren summed it up when they said, "He's the kind of man I want to be," and "I'm glad he'll be my Grandpa in Heaven!" Perhaps Charles Dickens said it best when he stated, "I love these little people, and it is not a slight thing, when they, who are so fresh from God, love us."
