said John did all of his legal work and he had been to the Boyden home about a month ago to visit him. I could feel his devotion. This is only one example of the many kinds of ties that existed between John and the friends who came to pay their respects. In connection with doing the biographical sketch at the funeral, John Jr. expressed appreciation: In behalf of the family I wish to thank everyone who has contributed to our comfort and welfare during Dad's illness. We are deeply grateful to his doctors for their very skillful and compassionate care. And especially we thank Uncle Everett and Aunt Maxine, Dad's brother and sister, for their love and support in a difficult time. Through a long period of sustained illness we have been strengthened by numerous close personal friends, and to all of you we express our heartfelt thanks. John Jr. closed his remarks with the following: Dad pronounced his own benediction in a brief poem he wrote for the funeral of President George R. Hill of the Sunday School: While life's now longer shadows reach their way far to the east, I perceive the inevitable sunset, the hour of memory feast. Oh Lord, it isn't easy my humble thanks to say, From swaddling clothes to temple gowns on earth's last precious day. I cherish every hour, in struggle and in peace, The challenge of the battle and conclusion's sweet release. I thank Thee for my own free choice, whatever be the cost. But more than that I thank Thee for the Hand that guides, when lost.
