Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
from a challenge, and his last experience with life was no exception, Dad bore his suffering, not with bitterness, but with deep appreciation for the love of the Lord which he felt so strongly. John, Jr. said, in reference to the last hours of his father's life: Dad was physiologically very strong. We could not predict when he would be taken. He gave us the signal on the afternoon of his death when he said (to Orpha), "Oh Mama, I'm going home." Later in the evening I stood at his bedside sensing that it was near the end. He introduced himself.. .and said, "1 was in John Boyden's scout troop over 60 years ago.. .Times were very difficult for a Japanese American, but John wouldn't let me get discouraged. He encouraged me to make something for myself. I am a pharmacist now and it's all because of John." After a short period of time he said, "I have a daughter who is just completing her medical degree and I have another daughter who is a pharmacist, and it's all because of John's encouragement." He
