a platform to elevate one end of the big bed, installed holding bars and equipment in the bathroom, and had several other gadgets made to make things easier for Dad. I remember the night Dad died Paul spent the anxious waiting hours restoring the bathroom back to normal for Mother. Carmen wrote the following to express the feeling of the family concerning John's period of sickness: Dad's character received its final refinement during his last three years which were filled with illness and suffering. Excmciating pain was stayed by a temporary reprieve which Dad knew was the result of a family and ward fast for him. Nevertheless, his time had come. He bore the increasing infirmities without complaint and worked on legal affairs and his personal history as long as he possibly could. He had some very special personal experiences which confirmed his deep faith in the Savior, and he continually reminded us all that the Lord is aware of us personally and loves us. He had no fear of death because he gave his best to life and knew that he was physically incapable of doing more. It seemed to us that he was looking forward to the challenge of what lies beyond the grave. Dad always looked forward to new experiences and new challenges, and he viewed death in the same way. He was always concerned for Mother and appreciative of the wonderful way in which she met his needs during his illness. She didn't do for Dad what he could still do for himself, but she had a special sense for what was needed and provided it. As ckldren we always thought Dad was the epitome of kindness and all that was good, and we never questioned his love for Mother. But during his illness there seemed to be a further refining and deepening of an already deep soul and a special bonding of an already-secure and strong relationship with Mother. We sorrowed at his suffering but marvelled at the transformation. His willingness to submit to all things was an example we shall never forget. Dad was never one to shrink
