Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
his personal history. He ran out of steam well before the project was completed, and I had the privilege to sit beside him and paste clippings into his book. Dad was always so meticulous, and I tried to do everything as neatly and orderly as possible to produce something that would be equal to his standards. I took the hides from the Coalville cattle to the binder and discussed just how these things should be put together and then discussed the results with Dad. We agreed the front should bear the "lazy J B brand. Dad had already written the title page, "Three Score and Ten in Retrospect." I kidded with Dad that, if he hadn't done so many things, I'd have had the job completed long ago. It was interesting how each of us children found our own special niche for showing our love and concern: John, Jr., of course, handled the medical end of things. He stopped by nearly every morning on his way to work to check out medications, answer questions, etc. At his insistence, mother called several times in the middle of the night and he came immediately to assist. Dad had made it clear that he did not want to go to the hospital or have anything done to prolong his life. This made it difficult for John - not being able to do the things he had been trained to do. Mother and Dad were so careful not to impose on his physicians (Dr. Ernest Wilkinson, Jr., Dr. Russell Nelson and Dr. Richard Middleton), and it was wonderful for them to be able to depend on John in this way. Steve handled'all the legal and financial affairs. He spent endless hours arranging t h i s just as Dad wanted them, and helping Mother understand new financial arrangements. He is patient and reliable and a great deal like Dad, and it was expected that he would inherit the task of carrying on Mother's business concerns. Paul made his contribution for Dad by constantly altering the physical environment to suit Dad's changing needs. He built
