Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
part to explain why I held him in such high esteem now seems feeble and unnecessary. I think you both understand. O n June 22, 1979, a reception was held in the law offices, on the 10th floor of the Kennecott Building, in recognition of John S. Boyden and J. Stuart McMaster having completed fifty years in the practice of law. Boyden and McMaster had attended and completed law school together, then began the practice of law in the same office in Salt Lake. This was a very special occasion which gave family and friends an opportunity to honor and pay their respects to both John and Stu. By this time, John and the family knew that his time was limited; however, the reception was not a time for sadness but a time to celebrate a rewarding and successful life. Pat's Journal includes an "amusing" incident that occurred November 29, 1979, during this difficult period when John still wanted to participate in the life going on around him, but his bodily limitations made this difficult. Two of our boys had major roles in "Christmas Carol" playing at Promised Valley Playhouse. All seats were general admission, so it was necessary to get there at least an hour early in order to get a good seat. Dad was anxious to see the production, but it was impossible for him to sit that long. Pat Davis, one of the administrators of the Playhouse, is a member of our ward. I asked her if there would be any way to reserve him a seat. She said not to worry, that she would have four saved for us. When we arrived opening night, at 7:55 p.m., the place was packed, except for the best four seats in the theater, which were roped off. A hush fell over the theater as we were ushered to them. I'm sure people were expecting President Kimball or some other dignitary! Steve's mother (Orpha) was mortified. I got quite a kick out of it (major character flaw). When we were all seated Dad leaned forward and said to me, "I tried to look as old and sick as I could."
