Three Score und Ten in Retrospect
Conferring of the degree of Juris Doctor carries with it no omnipotent power. Beyond the hills of justice lies a royal purple range of mercy borne of the upheavals in man's weaknesses and imperfections, but extending peaks of wisdom and understanding. From these heights we see through compassion's eyes a clearer view with promise of a brighter day. O n this same occasion, John was awarded the prestigious "Honorary Order of the Coif." Steve was taken into the firm to help John with his Indian cases and other matters. He had worked there as a clerk during law school. John Jr. soon finished his internship in surgery at the New York Hospital (Cornell University) and had moved to California where he worked for a law firm. He and Marge and their two children decided to return to Utah, where John began work with the law firm of Worsley, Snow and Christensen, in March 1968. In 1970, John and Orpha decided to give their extensive collection of Indian art to Utah State University. In recognition of their valuable contributions, both in service and in the art collection, USU gave its highest recognition, the Distinguished Service Award to both Orpha and John at a banquet on November 13, 1970. The commendations read at the time the awards were presented, and the description included in a brochure prepared for the Indian Art Collection are included as an appendix. In March, 1971, Orpha and John were honored by initiation into Utah State University's Old Main Society. The citation reads: Mr. and Mrs. John S. Boyden have presented Utah State University with a valuable collection of Indian items and ceremonial artifacts. The extensive collection, to be housed in the Chase Fine Arts Center, includes Hopi Kachina Dolls, rare Navajo rugs, Hopi weavings, and excellent examples of Indian basketwork, among other items.
