Full of Years a d Honor
It is a source of pleasure to family members and friends, that the Silver Beaver was awarded to Orpha, at the Symphony Hall on Wednesday, February 16, 1983, in recognition of the many years of leadership and service she had given to establish Cub Scouting as an integral part of the Primaryprogram of the L.D.S. Church. John was a loyal alumnus of the University of Utah. demonstrating this in various ways during his lifetime. "On June 10, 1967, when Steve received his LLB (JD),John gave the "Convocation Address" to the University of Utah Law School. Part of his comments to Steve and his fellow graduates appears below, giving a glimpse of his philosophy concerning the legal profession (the address appears in full in the Appendi): We live in troubled times, Where does the right to protest end and the duty to conform begin? In what ways must the necessity of unity for survival curb individual license? At what point does taxation become confiscation? Where in the interest of public good must the economies of big business yield to opportunity for the beginner or the small independent operator? These questions are not new, but they are posed in a new setting. A fading generation p o s e them to you with many more not fully answered. May you meet them with stability and vision. Within your office, be it modest or pretentious, compensation will be made for injuries, disputes will be settled, friends may be re-made, and families reunited, all without thc aid of courts. Every lawyer is a judge. The courts are all too often the forum of the stubborn and the unreasonable.
