Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
worker on cancer and polio drives, and chaired the fashion show, one of the biggest events connected with the latter. Governor Clyde appointed her to the State Fair Board, where she served for two years. Governor Rampton appointed Orpha to the Governor's Committee on Women. He also appointed her to the Board of Trustees of Utah State University, her alma mater, and she served there from 1965 to 1969. These are only examples of the kinds of responsible positions Orpha held. Asked about this "busyness" which is typical of members of the Boyden family, the children say, "We thought that was a normal situation for all families." Honors After forty-four years of involvement with scouting, John's contributions to that program were recognized in 1962, when the Great Salt Lake Council of the Boy Scouts of America, in their annual meeting held in the L.D.S. Tabernacle, presented Silver Beavers to John and fourteen other Salt Lake area men. This is the statement of commendation written for John at the time of the presentation: An active community and professional leader, Mr. Boyden is well known and highly respected throughout the state as a champion of the cause of the American Indian. As an attorney, he is a member of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, and has just returned from a conference of this distinguished group in Mexico. Faithful in his Church, he has served with distinction as Bishop of his ward and as a member of the Sunday School General Board. Convinced of the value of Cub Scouting as a strength to family solidarity, Mr. Boyden and his wife have given strong encouragement to adoption and use of the program by the L.D.S. Church under guidance of the General Primary Association. This together with his having served as Scoutmaster, Cubmaster and as Cub Scout training chairman for the Council, has made an outstanding contribution to boyhood, both locally and throughout the nation.
